Indie Focus: 'No Wave' films caused a ripple felt in France Posted: Céline Danhier left a French law practice to shoot the era-rewind movie 'Blank City.' A group of like-minded young people pool their resources, make use of new, inexpensive technology and begin to make movies that capture their particular time and place. From the French New Wave to the recent American micro-budget movement, filmmakers have often come together just so. The documentary "Blank City," which opens in Los Angeles on Friday, explores the independent filmmakers of New York City's downtown scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. |
Surf guitar strikes a chord in Peru Posted: That reverb and tremolo rode the waves down the Pacific to Peru, where they were melded with guiro and conga. The result: cumbia peruana , which has traveled back north on several recent compilations. Few music styles are as indelibly linked to Southern California as surf guitar. Just a single chord, struck on a vintage Fender, with the right balance of ghostly tremolo and a rip current of reverb, can invoke an image of wood-paneled station wagons, board shorts and other endless summer cliches. It's a recipe for instant nostalgia — even for those not yet born in the early '60s — a sound that music historian Barney Hoskyns perfectly describes as "a tincture of angst and heartache." |
