Branagh is yet another art-house soul migrating to expensive superhero films.

Emmylou Harris, in the moment

Posted:

Her new album is called 'Hard Bargain,' but at 64, the singer-songwriter seems at ease with her life thus far.

Emmylou Harris is trailed by a ragtag parade of eager dogs when she answers a knock at the door of the comfortable two-story home on a fenceless parcel a few miles from downtown Nashville, where she lives with her 89-year-old mother, Eugenia.

The upcoming Rockstar Games release is more investigation than shoot-'em-up — a risky move. What's the big idea? The faces will tell the story.

Cultural Exchange: Nicolas Sarkozy, movie star? Well, sort of

The French leader gets the biopic treatment in 'La conquete.' It's a first for the country but not unexpected, given his American-style presidency.

For generations, French presidents have filled a nearly sacred role. They act as an embodiment of their republic's lofty ideals, and they exude such judiciousness and serenity that they often end up seeming oddly otherworldly.

Critic's Notebook: 'Car 54, Where Are You?'

The New York-set cop sitcom covers the same period as 'Mad Men,' but it's the real deal. After all, it was filmed in the Bronx in the early '60s.

If the "Mad Men" crisis has got you down — shutdown averted, but no new episodes until 2012 — I would like to offer a little perspective. First, even in a year that is not A Year Without "Mad Men," it is only a "Mad Men" year for 13 out of 52 weeks; presumably, in the normal course of things, you are all right the other 39. Second, there is a lot of other television to watch, new and old, some of which touches the same bases as "Mad Men," if not exactly in the same way, or to the same point.

How the L.A. Noire makers re-created the city of 1947

The production design team went through image archives, vintage clothing stores and more to get things just right. (But OK, they did cheat a little on the palm trees.)

I'm on the city's surface streets, heading from downtown to Hollywood. Only a few cars share the road. I don't bother to pull onto the 101. Because it's not there.
