No time for '[REC]' filmmakers to pause Posted: 04 Jul 2010 12:00 AM PDT Spanish filmmakers Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró return to that zombie-filled apartment for their sequel to '[REC].' With their 2007 low-budget documentary-style horror movie "[REC]," Spanish filmmakers Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró harnessed the manic spirit of first-person shooter video games to find a fresh take on the blood-soaked zombie genre. But recapturing that same kind of frenzied energy for their follow-up, "[REC] 2," which opens Friday and is also currently available on video on demand, proved challenging.
Posted: 04 Jul 2010 12:00 AM PDT Laurence Fishburne is proud to wear the mantle of Justice Thurgood Marshall. The first thing you notice is the assured bearing and the deep, authoritative voice (this guy did play Morpheus, after all). Then the judicious observations, the strategic dropping of a timely anecdote, the eyes that calmly take your measure, like a barrister scanning a thick stack of legal briefs.

The Sunday Conversation: Sandra Tsing Loh Posted: 04 Jul 2010 12:00 AM PDT While explaining why inoculation needles are longer nowadays, the raconteur also talks about why she wants to expand her science shows beyond featurettes. Pasadena public radio personality-writer-monologuist-concert pianist-Caltech grad Sandra Tsing Loh can be heard every week in some 360 markets in the U.S. and abroad (via the Armed Forces Radio Network), wittily illuminating some interesting but hitherto obscure factoid in her minute-long show-ette, "The Loh Down on Science" ( lohdownonscience.com ). Now the versatile host, based at KPCC-FM (89.3), is developing an hourlong quiz and variety show designed to shed light on research by Caltech professors — and lend new meaning to the phrase "popular science." She hopes to launch the show by the end of the year. Beginning Oct. 3, the live monthly shows will be open to the public as part of Caltech's family science day, and the website will be streaming video from the early pilots.
Second Look: Some films in noir collection lose allure in light of day Posted: 04 Jul 2010 12:00 AM PDT Set from Columbia features some movies made as the genre was waning. The films in the five-disc set "Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics II" were released as the movement was nearing its end, and in some the wear has begun to show. Apart from chronology, there's little to tie them together, but there's a common sense of a genre fraying at the seams, which in some cases translates as an opportunity to bust it wide open.
