Critic's Notebook: Jimmy Fallon, you're growing on us Posted: 28 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST Late at night, the comic actor turned talk show host is displaying a unique way with questions, a penchant for high-quality skits and multiple other ways of charming an audience. Now that Conan O'Brien has come to rest, presumably for more than seven months, as the host of a TBS talk show, it seems like a good time to take another look at the person who replaced him, and I don't mean Jay Leno. One year and nine months ago Jimmy Fallon — who, like O'Brien, was touched by the hand of Lorne, and I do mean Michaels — followed O'Brien into the "Late Night" chair previously vacated by David Letterman. |

Indie Focus: 'Night Catches Us' examines the Black Panthers circa 1976 Posted: 28 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST Writer-director Tanya Hamilton examines the party in a Philadelphia setting. Recent films such as "Carlos," "The Baader Meinhof Complex" and "Che" have looked at the blowback and aftermath of the revolutionary adventures of the 1960s and '70s across Europe and South America. With "Night Catches Us" writer-director Tanya Hamilton brings some of those same passions and upheavals to domestic shores with a look at the personal undercurrents that drive the political actions in one neighborhood in Philadelphia in 1976. |
Working Hollywood: Theatrical lighting designers Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer Posted: 28 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST They have worked together for almost 25 years. Their latest project was 'Burlesque.' When they were growing up, Jules Fisher dreamed of becoming a magician and Peggy Eisenhauer trained to become a concert pianist. Eventually they ended up joining forces to bring their special combination of hocus-pocus and musicality to films, including this month's "Burlesque," through theatrical lighting design. |
David Goldblatt's lens is fixed on South Africa Posted: 28 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST The photographer searches for the causes of his country's ills rather than just shooting the effects. When he saw the Soweto stadium that was built for soccer's World Cup, photographer David Goldblatt could not participate in the almost universal South African exultation, the celebration of the structure. Instead, he felt angry. |
