Stephen Sondheim: Merrily he rolls along Posted: 08 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST First there were the homages (he turned 80 this year). Then there's the new book — 'Finishing the Hat.' Now he's on a West Coast tour that brings him to UCLA on Monday night. Stately and rumpled, Stephen Sondheim descended from an upper floor of his elegant East Side townhouse and submitted to the interview as though it were a necessary barber shop shave. He's used to these intrusions — the artist obliged to natter on about his work was one of the themes of "Sunday in the Park With George" — but this year the distractions have gone to a harrying new extreme. |
Company Town: 'Megamind' orchestrates a box-office win Posted: 08 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST The animated 3-D comedy finishes first but at the low end of forecasts. 'Due Date' and 'For Colored Girls' also draw substantial audiences. An abundance of wide openings was good for moviegoing this weekend — but not great for any individual film. Three movies with discrete audiences each performed reasonably well, if hardly above expectations, as the film business appeared to take in more dollars than on any other first weekend of November. |

An appreciation: Jill Clayburgh Posted: 08 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PST With studied intelligence and a natural grace, she brought us the Clayburgh woman: flawed, vulnerable, feisty and smart. There is a classic Jill Clayburgh scene in Paul Mazursky's "An Unmarried Woman," the 1978 film the actress will be remembered for most in a career that kept her busy with work nearly until her death on Friday. She's walking down a crowded New York City sidewalk having just learned her husband is leaving her for someone half her age, the fresh wound visible only in those eyes, a soft cornflower blue gone stone cold. |
