Director Christopher Nolan's latest is a heist movie with an unusual target: the mind.

July is the month when movies gets dizzy (or is it ditsy?) from the heat, and this year is no exception, with films featuring heartthrob vampires, evil aliens and the never-gets-old concept of talking dogs. But on July 16, in the middle of the usual popcorn parade, director Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. will deliver "Inception," a strange thriller that has been a Hollywood mystery for months thanks to its cryptic title and the fact that the studio has guarded the Nolan-penned script like a state secret.

Linda Vista Community Hospital in Boyle Heights, where railroad workers once recuperated, is now used for movie and TV shoots. Crews working on horror flicks say the place often gives them the creeps.

The iron chain falls with a clang as the old man steps into the dark, deserted hallway of Linda Vista Community Hospital. Lights flicker and a stench of mold hangs in the air. Down the main corridor, a lone metal gurney rests against a wall.

Sunday Conversation with Lily Tomlin

Playing the wife of a Bernie Madoff-like character on 'Damages' has been a thrill for the actress, who is a huge fan of the series.

The many faces of Lily Tomlin are well known to television audiences, and with her current gig on the FX legal thriller "Damages," there's one more just as compelling. Tomlin, 70, plays Marilyn Tobin, the dispossessed wife of the Bernie Madoff figure, Louis Tobin, and a dark departure from the classic characters she introduced on "Laugh-In" 40 years ago.

To show what they can do, these brothers from Australia began making movies.

A pair of illicit lovers, a bag of money and a slim hope for a new life -- these are some of the essential building blocks of crime fiction. They are also the backbone of the story in "The Square," an Australian-made film from brothers Nash and Joel Edgerton that is something of a self-conscious throwback to the post-"Reservoir Dogs" crime thrillers of the 1990s.
