'Rango,' 'Cowboys & Aliens,' Red Dead Redemption search for new Old West Posted: 06 Mar 2011 04:58 AM PST |
Anthony Mackie adjusts to film roles Posted: The 'Adjustment Bureau' star prefers to work in theater and indie films, but big studio projects pay the bills. Anthony Mackie had appeared in about two dozen films, including "8 Mile," "Half Nelson" and "The Manchurian Candidate" before "The Hurt Locker," 2009's best picture Academy Award winner. But apparently, it took that performance — as a no-nonsense Army sergeant opposite Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner — to get some people in Hollywood to realize he had even been working as an actor. |
Cultural Exchange: A porn star at 76 Posted: He used to be a travel agent. Now Shigeo Tokuda is a big star in Japan's emerging adult-movie genre known as 'elder-porn.' At the seemingly fragile age of 76, his story is the stuff of Hollywood legend (Well, maybe the seamier side of the San Fernando Valley), a tale made more outlandish because it happened to a buttoned-down salary man in hyper-conservative Japan. |
Filming ban stirs up L.A. neighborhood Posted: 05 Mar 2011 06:51 PM PST When the Los Feliz Estates homeowners association began barring owners from renting out their homes for shoots, the policy change provoked a reaction in the exclusive enclave. Adrine Andreasian was thrilled last August when a man identifying himself as a "location scout" for the NBC television series "Law & Order: Los Angeles" knocked on the door of her newly remodeled Mediterranean-style home in Los Feliz Estates and asked about using the house in an episode. The shoot would last three days, and the production company would pay the homeowner about $30,000. |
Second Look: 'Around a Small Mountain' Posted: One of the most original filmmakers of all time — France's Jacques Rivette — is the ringmaster of this delicate dance of attraction and avoidance. Among the founding fathers of the French New Wave, Jacques Rivette, who turned 83 this month, has remained a relatively forgotten figure. His films were less fashionable and often more perplexing than those of his peers Jean Luc-Godard, Éric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol. |

Critic's Notebook: With everything available, what will you watch? Posted: With choice upon choice from subscription services such as Netflix, you can have access without the burden of ownership. Choose wisely. Video-rental giant Netflix last week announced a two-year licensing deal with CBS that will make a host of recent and ancient series — including such CBS-distributed series as "Twin Peaks," which aired on ABC, and "Cheers" and "Star Trek," from NBC — available to stream. It joins Amazon.com, now offering "unlimited instant videos" to its Prime members (who pay a premium for free, faster shipping of solid objects) and Hulu's Hulu Plus, which makes available scores of current and back-catalog series from part-owners NBC, ABC and Fox, among others, in a brewing war of video subscription services. |
The Sunday Conversation: Sergio Mendes Posted: The Brasil '66 founder marks his 50th anniversary in music with a new album, his first film score and a Geffen Playhouse gig. Grammy winner Sergio Mendes, 70, one of Brazil's most famous exports, kicks off his 50th anniversary in the music business with a new album, "Celebration," compiling a half-century of hits; his first film score, the animated film "Rio"; and a special engagement at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood from Thursday through March 13. |
