Kids' TV: Disney Channel's preschool programming switches message to social values Posted: As the network replaces 'Playhouse Disney' with 'Disney Jr.,' preschool shows will shift emphasis from teaching ABCs and 1-2-3s to imparting social values in their storytelling. Once upon a time, according to Disney's upcoming show "Jake and the Never Land Pirates," there was a lonely little boy who wanted to be invited to play with the other children. But he never was. And years later, when the boy became a man, he was better known as Captain Hook. |

Gillian Anderson returns to television as Wallis Simpson in 'Any Human Heart' Posted: The onetime 'X-Files' star portrays Wallis Simpson, the woman who caused a king to abdicate, in the 'Masterpiece Classic' miniseries 'Any Human Heart.' Gillian Anderson returns to American television Sunday night as Wallis Simpson in the "Masterpiece Classic" miniseries "Any Human Heart," based on William Boyd's sweeping novel of one man's life spanning the 20th century. The PBS series, also starring Matthew Macfadyen, Jim Broadbent, Hayley Atwell and Kim Cattrall, runs through Feb. 27. |
Perspective: How true is 'The King's Speech'? Posted: Screenwriter David Seidler did some tweaking and telescoping to tell his tale, a history professor writes, but it was done to advance the story, plus explore the relationship between the stuttering royal and his commoner therapist. If any best-picture contender was going to face questions about taking liberties with the facts this Oscar season, it seemed likely it would be "The Social Network." But now that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg have tactfully retreated a bit from their initially contentious stands, the accuracy debate has shifted to "The King's Speech." |

Indie Focus: Love amid a tense reality in 'Carancho' Posted: An ambulance-chasing attorney and a drug-addicted doctor fall in love in Pablo Trapero's Argentine film. With his debut feature, 1999's "Crane World," a gritty slice-of-life about a day laborer in Buenos Aires, Pablo Trapero first demonstrated his facility for transcending the conventions of genre. With his latest, "Carancho," which played at last year's Cannes Film Festival and opened in Los Angeles on Friday, he's again looking to infuse genre storytelling with a beating human heart. |
