Critic's Notebook: Stanley Tucci, the leading man of supporting players Posted: 05 Dec 2010 12:00 AM PST Whether it's as a villain — Adolf Eichmann, anyone? — or as Julia Child's devoted husband, the empathetic actor has made an art out of paying attention onscreen. Actor Stanley Tucci is a stealth-bombing mischief-maker, an eye-twinkling scene-stealer. Often flying under the radar, he is precision in action and deadly — or deadly funny if that's the mission — when you least expect it. At the moment, he's the best thing about the disappointing bump and grind of "Burlesque," but then he's made a habit of being really good in really bad movies. Fortunately, he's also made a habit of being terrific in the great ones, a quality that Hollywood hasn't, in my mind, appreciated nearly enough. |

Critic's notebook: With so much good TV, youngsters have no time for oldies but goodies Posted: 05 Dec 2010 12:00 AM PST Abbott and Costello? Charlie Chan? Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart? Sorry, but Disney, HBO Family and Nickelodeon beckon. My 12-year-old son recently informed me that he didn't much see the point of black-and-white movies, and I realized this horrifying state of affairs could be blamed only on television. The fact that there's so much good television, that is. |

Martha Stewart's stock is sinking Posted: 05 Dec 2010 12:00 AM PST She appears to be at a make-or-break point. Her company lost $14 million in 2009 and her TV ratings on the Hallmark Channel are abysmal. But she's pushing herself to try to attract younger fans. She appears to be at a make-or-break point.
